Caption This: Glenn's Gaze

Nathaniel has already done the job of lamenting Glenn Close's sad loss again at Oscar's big night, so let's take some joy in one thing she did win that night: the internet. The spirit of goodwill and love for the screen legend has been everywhere online this season, from sharing selfies with Chalamet to her dog Sir Pippin of Beanfield's Instagram. But last night she gave us a genius bit of viral performance when she caught the eye of co-nominee Melissa McCarthy on the red carpet. The results were glamorous and... sexual (?) in nature.

Reader, tell us: what is Glenn Close thinking?

Make Up For Ever

by Seán McGovern

About ten months from now, there will be a press release from the Academy informing us that some of the 24 categories will be handed out during the commerical breaks. Initially there will be uproar all over again. How dare they?! Didn't we go through all this last year? What an outrage! But then I'll turn to you and say 'yeah but remember those make-up people who won for Vice?' at which point we shall all accept this harsh but necessary decision...

The last time each Best Picture nominee won an award was 2014 but it's not so common since something usually goes home empty-handed.

Final Oscar Predictions

by Nathaniel R

Sharing a predictions article I wrote for Towleroad yesterday just after having posted our final predictions in that penultimate podcast discussion of the season. It's highly likely that I've contradicted myself a few times. And I'm already regretting some of those "final" predictions. A confusing year it's been. CHAOS REIGNS! So here are the final predictions, posted in order of how the prizes were handed out last year. If I'm already second guessing myself there are notes in red font. Category titles will take you to the corresponding chart where you have one last day to vote on your favourites. Ready?  Here we go...

'Can You Ever Forgive' everyone ignoring Marielle Heller?

by Nathaniel R

Marielle Heller is, we suspect, a real deal cinematic treasure. Her debut film, the sexually charged, inventively imagined Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) showed a ton of promise. Her second feature Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018), while more modest at first glance, was yet more complex and successful.

We think she ought to have been one of the Best Director nominees with Oscar this year, which is why she's in our Film Bitch Awards Best Director lineup...
