Showbiz History: Olivier Assayas, MASH, Streep's Angels win, etc...

5 random things that happened on this day, January 25th, in showbiz history...

1949 The first Primetime Emmys ever were held at the Hollywood Athletic Club. But the Emmys then were not as we know them today. They were purely local celebrating Los Angeles television programs and stations. Over the first decade they morphed into the national TV celebration we have today... albeit with far fewer categories.

1961 Disney's 101 Dalmations came out on this day. We had a lot of fun writing about it for its 50th anniversary...

Streaming Roulette, August: Serenity, Red Sea Diving Resort, and two major 1981 classics

As is our practice we've selected a handful of titles and frozen the films at utterly random moments without cheating (whatever comes up comes up!). It's our way of previewing new titles streaming each month. So what should you queue up for AUGUST 2019 ?(★ means we recommend catching them.) Please do let us know if you're dying to discuss any of the films and maybe we'll write about one or two of 'em  You rarely tell us but we'll try if you do.

[COUGHING]

Jackie Brown (1997) ★  on Netflix
Is De Niro coughing to distract you from Once Upon a Time ...  in Hollywood for a minute? He's got a new trailer out and that would like a little attention, too. On the couch is Bridget Fonda giving what is easily one of her top two performances (the other one is in a little seen 80s movie called Scandal). We should probably see this particular Quentin Tarantino flick again. Beyond Fonda's perpetually baked surfer girl I don't personally remember much about it except for that  Rashomon inspired scene in the mall, and Pam Grier and Robert Forster being a fine match in the two central roles.

[HEAVY BREATHING]

Body Heat (1981) ★  on HBO
Nice wedding ring shot. That ain't her husband...

Watch at Home: The insane "Serenity" and "Extremely Wicked" Zac Efron

Nathaniel R giving you the heads up on what's available to you now to screen at home.

Newish on DVD/Blu-Ray
Serenity - Must be seen to be believed. We can't wait for it to hit streaming and watch the masses catch on to this new camp classic.
Tickled - Unsure why this famous doc about fetish videos and the shady man who produced them took 3 years to end up on DVD.
The Gospel According to André - well-reviewed fashion doc.

Also new: Taraji P Henson hears What Men Want, Gina Rodriguez gets kidnapped in the remake of Miss Bala, Mads Mikkelsen freezes in Arctic, and Everybody Knows something or other about Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. Great iTunes deals and new to streaming after the jump...

Say A Prayer For "Serenity"

by Jason Adams

Although I don't think it's ever spoken in the film it's hard not to have the "Serenity Prayer" -- God grant me the serenity, wisdom, change, courage, check and etc -- echoing in your cavernous, more cavernous by the second, head while watching Serenity, writer-director Steven Knight's nervous-breakdown-put-to-film. Starring Matthew McConaughey as the hard-drinking and hard-sexing good ol' boy in paradise called Baker Dill (and really we all knew it was only a matter of time before Matthew McConaughey played a character called "Baker Dill" right?) watching Serenity is, well, an experience that calls for prayer. Any prayer. An exorcism, even.

I realize at this point, with these balls-deep references to demon possessions and nervous breakdowns, you're probably thinking that Serenity sounds like a miserable experience. It's not...
