Review: Henry Golding in "Monsoon"

Henry Golding was eight years old when he and his family left Malaysia for England. Director Hong Khaou (Lilting) was an infant when his family fled the Khmer Rouge for Vietnam. That shared experience of displacement-fueled ambiguity and the concept of reconciling one’s national identity is the foundation on which the new film Monsoon is built.   

Golding plays Kit, a British-Vietnamese man who returns to the country he and his family fled some thirty years prior. Kit cannot speak Vietnamese, has cloudy childhood memories of life in Vietnam, and is unable to process the unfamiliarity of the land he once called home...

With the films of Steve McQueen's anthology, Small Axe, earning critical raves as they traverse through the festival circuit, it's a good time to remember some of his previous projects. While 12 Years a Slave was a great success that conquered acclaim and many awards, the rest of the director's filmography has been more polarizing and arguably underrated. It feels wrong, for instance, that his recurring muse, Michael Fassbender, got the first of two Oscar nominations for his least impressive contribution to McQueen's oeuvre. Oscar voters aren't the greatest fans of erotic thrillers. Despite that, there are some times when a cinematic achievement is so undeniable that AMPAS' usual prejudices are thrown out the window. One good example is Adrian Lyne's Fatal Attraction, a cultural phenomenon that, in 1987, managed to nab six Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Actress. Years later, another of Lyne's erotic reveries would be honored with an important nod, though this time it was just in the Best Actress category. The picture was 2002's Unfaithful and the actress was Diane Lane delivering one of the most magnificent performances of her career. Her work as Connie Sumner is a masterclass in sexual discovery and abandonment, guilt, and desire.

If for nothing else, Lane earned the nomination for a scene in the middle of the movie, when her adulterous character is returning home by train, after her first tryst with Olivier Martinez's sexy bookdealer…
