Paging Lacuna, Inc. - Naomi Watts' 2013 is One She'd Rather Forget!

One of my favourite movie-going memories of 2013 was seeing the trailer for Adore play before a bemused sold out opening weekend audience at Blue Jasmine. Amongst the scattered laughs was one lady a row or two behind me who uttered to her companion, “What is Naomi Watts doing?” She, and the rest of us, are sadly still waiting for an answer. On the heels of that Oscar nomination for The Impossible, Watts has since appeared in two films that have literally been laughed off of cinema screens.

October. It's a Wrap

Two months left to go and we wrap 2013. I can't believe how close to the Oscar thick of it we are. Before we really dive in (I'm off to LA again real soon) a last look back at October. We spent a lot of time with horror films of course (tis the season) for those well received "Before Exorcist / After Exorcist" lists... but what else was hot this month? With September closing we're entering the final quarter, the last gasp of 2013! August. It's a Wrap

Summer's end. Halleloo! I can practically taste the fall and it is delicious. Mmmmm dead leaves. Here are some key posts from the dog days of summer in case you missed them.

COMING IN SEPTEMBER: It's Back to School Month so we'll be visiting some edumucational movies -- any suggestions? We'll be hitting new movies like The Family (La Pfeiffer), Don Jon (Scarjo & JGL), The Face of Love (The Bening!), and Prisoners (Viola, Hugh, and Jake? Yes please times three). Nathaniel and Amir will be reporting live from TIFF next week and Nathaniel, Jose, JA and Glenn will be reporting live from NYFF later in the month.

Finally, we had great fun in August "introducing" the characters from 1952's Supporting Actress lineup, revisiting the Oscar ceremony and then reviving Stinky Lulu's Smackdown. So next month 'The Year of the Month' (that has an odd ring to it, eh?) is 1980 so if you want to maximize your reading pleasure you'll rent Supporting Actress nominated films like Raging Bull, Private Benjamin, Melvin & Howard, Inside Moves, and Resurrection and maybe catch a few of the other seminal films from that year ... you know, for context.

The Worst of The Worst Summer Seasons?

Tim here. Oscar Season is about ready to officially kick off, with the first Gurus of Gold listing landing today, and the massively important Venice, Telluride , and Toronto film festivals all starting within the next week or two, but before we move into the last phase of the movie calendar year, I’d like to spend one more moment eulogizing the year that has been, nodding one last time in the direction of the summer that, just about everybody agrees, has been the absolute pits.

We’ve already gone over that, so instead of belaboring a point, I’d like to ask the question, was summer, 2013, really the worst ever? I’m pretty confident that the answer to that is no, and to prove it, I’d like to offer up three possibilities for the title of Worst Summer Movie Season of All Time that put 2013 to shame. Or, y’know, make it look good. Whichever way you want to put it.
