Poster and Clip from "Nyad"

by Nathaniel R

Netflix has released the poster and the first clip from Nyad, the true story of open water swimmer Diana Nyad's attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida at 60 years of age. The film is the first narrative feature from Oscar-winning documentarians Elisabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and it's based on the memoir "Find a Way". The film hits theaters on October 20th for two weeks before landing on Netflix. As for myself, I'll see it on the big screen not just for the always amazing Annette Bening but also because the cinematographer is Oscar winner Claudio Miranda so maybe there are gorgeous images of the open water?

International Oscar Race - Australia's Choice. Plus Mexican and Swedish submission finalists

by Nathaniel R

"Shayda" will be Australia's Oscar submission

We've already shared some news in our favourite non-acting Oscar category. The most exciting thing at the moment is the Danish finalists which include a film called either Promised Land or Bastard (depending on where its playing). Elisa tells us that its going to be a major contender and could even bag Mads Mikkelsen the Best Actor win in Venice. Other recent Oscar updates for this category involved submissions from Estonia, South Korea and Uruguay and a finalist list from Netherlands, and news from Switzerland, Chile, and Tajikstan. We now have 13 submissions. The charts have been updated. The latest exciting news is the finalist lists from two important countries who historically perform well in this category, Mexico and Sweden...

Venice 2023: The latest films from Luc Besson and Isabelle Huppert

by Elisa Giudici

Caleb Landry Jones in "Dogman"

We seem to have a new Joker on our hands, or at the very least, a new contender like The Whale, I'm afraid. To be fully transparent, I despised the former and adored the latter. Luc Besson's Dogman treads toward a similar future: it will deeply move some audience members and prompt visceral aversion in the others...

Venice 2023: Mongolia's "City of Wind" and Michael Mann's "Ferrari"

by Elisa Giudici

"City of Wind"

The first surprise in Venice, City of Wind, was a delightful one. It's incredibly rare to come across a Mongolian film, so I made sure to set aside 104 minutes for a teen romance and shamanic party time adventure;xTime well spent! Keep an eye on this title for both the Orizzonti Palmares and the Best International Movie Oscar race. And speaking of Oscar hopefuls, Ferrari also pulled up on the Lido...

Category Analysis - Limited Series Supporting Categories

by Christopher James

Will Golden Globe winner Paul Walter Hauser win the Emmy for his work on Apple TV+'s Black Bird?

Emmy voters spread the wealth quite a bit in the Limited Series/TV Movie section of their ballots. When Abe covered the Drama Supporting races only four shows filled the sixteen (!) available slots. The same Supporting Categories for limited series bring us eight shows with only fourteen slots to fill.

Both Beef and Welcome to Chippendales have three nominated supporting performances. Meanwhile, the following shows have two actors represented between the two categories - Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Black Bird. These races welcomed in a healthy mix of newcomers (six nominees received their first acting Emmy nomination) alongside three previous Emmy winners. Will the newcomers overthrow the proven winners? Let’s take a look at the categories and their submissions...
