Heads up! At Movie City News the first "Gurus of Gold" charts are up with yours truly along with several other pundits - apparently I'm the only one nervous about Riz Ahmed's Oscar prospects and the one who is most certain about One Night in Miami's prospects. Extremely grossed out that Aaron Sorkin makes the top five in Best Director. Yes, he's a talented writer but come on now... that's a different skill set.

All Oscar Charts have been updated!

All the Oscar charts are updated four days before the Spirit Award nominations are announced and about two weeks before the biggies (Globes and SAG) potentially throw everything into disarray by playing favourites and telling other films to get lost. We're now worried we're underestimating multiple films since lately the Oscar voters have been geting lazy and giving 10+ nominations to multiple films... and we don't have any film doing that kind of numbers this year. We might be overestimating Mank and underestimating Da 5 Bloods. Some films still feel like they could either settle for disappointing 1 or 2 nods or become formidable contenders like, say, Promising Young Woman, First Cow, and Minari.

Oscar Charts - All acting categories two weeks before Globe & SAG nods

As strange as it is to note, it's still worth reiterating that Academy voters don't begin to fill out their nomination ballots for another five and a half weeks (!!!) A lot of things can change in that long of a stretch of time. Films and performances can move in or out of favor in two weeks time, let alone five!  But here is where our crystal ball is right now...

Where will Oscar voters turn for the Best Cinematography nominations this season. Will they be looking for evocative landscapes, genre polish, intimate dramas, gaudy musicals, or tour de force biopics? In an Oscar year that's been characterized by the near complete lack of the theatrical experience, the category that arguably most needs that to soar is a big question mark. With most voters not seeing the contenders on the big screen what will they make of, say, Dariusz Wolski's large open impressive vistas in News of the World? Will Hoyte van Hoytema's slick lensing of something expensive like Tenet have any thrilling sweep on television screens? Will Mandy Walker's work on Mulan have any takers since it fits both of those descriptions?
