I Dream of Arendelle

Last night, surely prompted by Frozen's Golden Globe win and upcoming Oscar run, I dreamt that I discovered a magical threat to Arendelle. I helped Queen Elsa find enemy spies who were watching her every move through carefully planted glittery baubles placed around the kingdom. Since Disney princesses veritable sweat glittery knickknacks, you can imagine how difficult the foreign objects were to discover and destroy. [more...]

Curio: Just Keep Livin'

Alexa here. My personal highlight of the Golden Globes this year, and of my Sunday night, was Matthew McConaughey.  I'm glad that all the prognostication over the last few years finally payed off with a win for him. And I loved/found it hilarious how "on brand" he was with his speech (opening it with "alright alright alright" and closing with a variation of "just keep livin").

Right after the show I threw "True Detective" on, and it couldn't have lived up to the hype more, with McConaughey delivering yet another career-high performance in the first episode.  Since the chances of a Wooderson-esque speech at the Oscars are probably still low, let's celebrate this moment with some curios in the Texan's honor.

More after the jump including bongos...

The Golden Rise of Lupita Nyong'o

Sure, she lost the Golden Globe last night to JLaw's razzle dazzle in American Hustle, but is there anyone conscious of social media / the internet / the movies who doesn't think Lupita Nyong'o has emerged as a winner* last night? She'll win numerous Best Dressed lists for the Ralph Lauren cape look even if she doesn't have a statue to go with it.

This is Lupita, overachieving, in the last 9 days alone! We'll leave it to this Best Supporting Actress to figure out how to top these looks come SAG weekend and Oscar night.

Palm Springs, W, AFI, LAFCA, Golden Globes

The Darling of the Red Carpet is certainly a more flattering title than "Queen of the Fields" as Master Epps horrifically dubs his abused Patsey in 12 Years a Slave

Aren't you dying to know what else Lupita has in her to show us onscreen? Here's to Hollywood and its most powerful directors shaking off their perpetual issue with black actresses (rarely giving them multiple chances to shine) and allowing her the run of the place. Let's give Viola and Lupita their pick of roles for the next couple of years -- we'd all surely reap the rewards.

*anyone other than Julia Louis-Dreyfus that is, who tweeted this cuteness last night in the Globe aftermath

Golden Globe Winners

refresh your screen for updates

I shall recap the Globes afterwards. I can't even with the live-blogging. I miss so much every time. So here is the winners list as they are announced and the general timeline of events.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
'don't ever do this again. It's so scary' - the first part!
SUPPORTING ACTRESS TV Jacqueline Bissett, Dancing on the Edge
clearly overwhelmed after such a long career. Remember when she slept with Rob Lowe in Class (1984)?
MINISERIES Behind the Candelabra
ACTRESS MINISERIES Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake
so deserving but i was not expecting her.

Captain Phillips & The Wolf of Wall Street intros...

ACTOR, DRAMA TV Bryan Cranson, Breaking Bad
DRAMA TV Breaking Bad

Philomena intro...

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE Alex Ebert, All is Lost
I'm so happy for this win and the guy has a cute moment with P Diddy. (Is that what we call him now? I seriously don't know/care)  "thanks for letting me try all over your movie"
BEST ORIGINAL SONG "Ordinary Love" U2 for Mandela
I should've predicted this. This was a 'duh' moment even though Frozen totally shoulda...
SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA TV Jon Voight, Ray Donovan
Damn, I was hoping for Rob Lowe who was so hilariously creepy  in Behind the Candelabra

Her intro... it occurs to me that these intros are so much more important to people who don't see all the movies. But no clips of the

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY, MUSICAL Amy Adams, American Hustle
Yep, she's getting the nomination over Streep. This woulda shocked us so hard a few months ago. (Like Julianne Moore she just waited so long to win anything major!)

Miss Golden Globe! It's the spawn of Kevin & Kyra.

BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA TV Robin Wright, House of Cards
SUPPORTING ACTOR, MOVIES Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
SCREENPLAY Spike Jonze, Her
(our "stealth entertainer of the year")

Nebraska intro...

BEST ACTOR, COMEDY TV Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
BEST FOREIGN FILM The Great Beauty
BEST ACTOR, MINISERIES/MOVIE  Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra
BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY TV Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Diane Keaton sings the end of her speech for Woody Allen. Adorable as ever.

Cecil B Demille goes to Woody Allen... Diane Keaton speaks on his behalf.

BEST DIRECTOR Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Makes a herpes joke to Sandra Bullock. LOL.
BEST ACTOR, COMEDY Leonardo DiCaprio, Wolf of Wall Street

Incredibly awkward 12 Years a Slave intro  but then a relevant to the movie Rush intro. What is going on?

BEST MOVIE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL American Hustle
BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
BEST ACTOR, DRAMA Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
BEST MOVIE, DRAMA 12 Years a Slave
Huge surprise given that it lost every other nomination ! Shocked acceptance speech with Sarah Paulson, McQueen dubbed "The Bette Davis of America" (???), acting as teleprompter for the frazzled director.
