Posterized: The films of Alexander Payne

Nebraska's most successful auteur son, 56 year old Alexander Payne is back with his seventh feature. Downsizing, his new satire about a man (Matt Damon) who joins a community that have shrunk themselves, premiered at Venice to the kind of reviews that seem startling until you remember all the reviews for all the other Payne directed movies. Raves are par for the course. He's won two Globes and two Oscars for his screenplays. His films have won an incredible 3 Best Picture prizes and he's also won four personal prizes from the normally spread-your-wealth folks at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association over the past 20 years.

The film opens in movie theaters on December 22nd and is expected to be both a box office hit and a major Oscar player. Could it finally be his year to win Best Picture?

First Poster for "The Greatest Showman"

Chris here. Forgive us if festival season has us distracted from some of the bigger budget cinematic events to come in the months ahead. But rest assured that we are still plenty excited about Hugh Jackman's upcoming The Greatest Showman. An original musical so soon after La La Land feels too good to be true - no, this isn't adapted from the Coleman/Stewart musical Barnum - but we're curious if this also has a solid chance with Oscar. All of the design elements, as witnessed in that first trailer, look eye-popping and sumptuous - but will this be more than an entertaining time at the movies this holiday season? Composers Pasek and Paul might at least have a solid chance to return to the Best Original Song race after their La La Land win last year - they're our current trophy hogs after also taking the Tony for Dear Evan Hansen.

Here's your reminder that we've got a splashy musical coming our way - the film's first poster! Why so shy about selling its megastar, I wonder - especially with some of that Logan goodwill to capitalize on...

mother! posters... who's next?

Darren Aronofsky's mother! has now released two posters (which you can click to embiggen if you so desire). We already discussed JLaw's version (though they've changed the typeface) but now we have Bardem's. Once you start getting character posters you can usually assume more are on the way.  Since Lawrence's poster is earthy with the nature, and Javier Bardem's is fiery can we assume La Pfeiffer gets air or water?

Fair warning: if there is not a painted character poster for Michelle Pfeiffer, I'm going to burn Protozoa Pictures down.

(In related news I want to make out with whoever designed the new title font and I can't stop thinking about that teaser)

Call Me By Your Name, Luca Guadagnino's already wildly acclaimed gay romantic drama, was just announced for TIFF. It will probably play NYFF, too, on its way to a limited release on November 24, the sweet Thanksgiving spot for Oscar hopeful movies.
