Months of Meryl: She-Devil (1989)

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep. 

#16 — Mary Fisher, a frivolous romance novelist who steals the husband of a dowdy housewife.

JOHN: For such a tepid and unruly film, She-Devil enjoys quite an outsized reputation. Considered by many to be the nadir of Streep’s early career and one of her worst performances, She-Devil is also a Streep turn that is often reblogged context-free online, which makes sense when one considers its outre, GIF-ready moments of ironic femininity and gaudy Real Housewives of Long Island aesthetic that some might consider ahead of its time. Having seen these images of Streep’s Mary Fisher before watching the film, I had anticipated fun kitsch or perhaps even smart camp. Roseanne’s film debut! Susan Seidelman with a budget! Meryl’s comedy vehicle to silence the critics! But these are promises that She-Devil most certainly does not keep...

Stage Door: The Complex Web of Theater Awards

Oscar fanatics have it easy. Each year roughly 300 movies are eligible for the Oscar race and those same titles (with very few exceptions) are also eligible for all the other movie awards on this continent. They're even (with a few more exceptions) the same slate of movies that are eligible ACROSS the ocean at the other major English language film awards (the BAFTAs). Not so with theater!

Theater awards, a nichier beast altogether, are ultra territorial and when there is crossover it can feel accidental or play out like an echo rather than a harmonic convergence. The Olivier Awards, for example, just honored Lin Manuel Miranda's blockbuster "Hamilton"  which the Tony Awards honored two years prior but the only real crossover for this year's Tony Awards is likely to be Angels in America which just transferred here with most of its London cast intact...

Soundtracking: "Westworld"

Westworld returns to HBO this Sunday, so Chris is taking on season one's hidden songs...

Remember back in 2016 when Westworld debuted and select corners of the internet went gaga over the songs that underscored its Thandie Newton-forefronted saloon. This would-be jukebox of pianistic gloom christened its maidens and gunslingers in the likes of Soundgarden and Radiohead, an easter egg in plain sight meant to draw oohs and ahs of macho irony.

Instead of stereotypical ragtime revelry, this wild west fantasy sounds like a wind-up music box sold at a Hot Topic...
