The hilarious thing about my “notes” from awards shows (and also movies come to think of it) is that I always get so caught up in them that the notes ultimately end long before they should. The better the thing… the sooner the notes trail off! Weekend Awards Wrap-Up: Just Before the Globes

Da'Vine Joy Randolph won the Big Four critics awards. Nothing can stop her now!

Hours away from the Golden Globes, it's time to consider the past two weeks of winners, runners-up, and the whole shebang. The new year started with a golden tsunami, as Randolph consolidated her favorite status even more than before, and Past Lives staked its claim as one of the season's major contenders. The NSFC was more conventional than expected, while the Astras were their usual self, regional critics groups did their thing, and the Alliance of Women Journalists continued to prove its un-seriousness. Also, a potentially fake critics group is making some noise.

Though the Oscar nominations are just a few weeks away, the season is far from over. If anything, the race is just now heating up…

SAG Predictions

Randolph and Giamatti both feel like sure things at SAG.

With SAG currently in the midst of their nominating process and just two weeks until SAG announces their nominees (January 10th), we have to wonder how “set” the acting fields are at this point in awards season. SAG has been known to throw one (sometimes two) curveballs in the traditional categories and year to year the “Outstanding Cast” award is always a mystery as there are no real precursors for it and general individual Oscar traction can only take you so far in a broader category, even if the traction is assumed to be related to the closest Oscar parallel (Best Picture). Let's look at the six film awards from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and predict....

Friday Awards Wrap-Up: Critics, Documentaries and Top Ten Fever!

Lily Gladstone started strong, but Emma Stone takes the lead in Best Actress this week.
Another week, another slew of critics awards and top 10s from some of the world's most prestigious film publications. Though Killers of the Flower Moon continues to lead the Best Picture race, it's not a consensus pick. Indeed, a wide variety of titles have taken top honors, making for an exciting season. Well, at least it's like that in the most important category. Da'Vine Joy Randolph continues to sweep the Supporting Actress prizes, having won every single one in the season so far, while Emma Stone has taken the lead in Best Actress over Lily Gladstone. The men's categories are more chaotic, while Nolan is ahead among directors. All in all, it's been a busy week…

A Quick Hello + Updated Oscar Charts

As the long holiday weekend comes to a close I wanted to come in and surprise you with a quick hello. I've been very absent. I'm fully aware. I've even written about the existential crisis but opted not to publish (for now, he said ominously? playfully?). Anyway, since it's gratitude season and a long holiday weekend I have to thank Cláudio for holding down the fort so beautifully. And thanks also to Nick, Juan Carlos, Eric, Glenn, Abe, and Chris for their November articles!  I thought briefly about writing a big sequel to Cláudio's "thankful for" post, but I will still be doing the Film Bitch Awards even if I do nothing else (hopefully I'll do something else) so don't want to give everything away just yet as to what excited me most this year's movie haul. So instead I opted to spend the spare hours inbetween holiday commitments to update the Oscar charts.

Awards season is about to hit full throttle. So it was long past time and there's quite a bit of movement on each chart. The big festival surprise was of course American Fiction so that has disrupted several charts. Overall it feels like a messy volatile year, punditry wise, which is my favourite kind of year. So many movies feel like they could get a lot of nominations... or come up much shorter than people were expecting.  I have things to say about Ferrari, Maestro, The Holdovers, The Taste of Things and Killers of the Flower Moon but I keep trying to learn my lesson about over-promising.
