Does Box Office Matter to Best Actress Hopefuls?

by Nathaniel R

Helen Mirren's The Queen was in many ways a completely standard win... a solid success before the nomination and an even bigger hit afterwardsDoes Box Office matter to Oscars? It does and it doesn't. And how much it matters varies from year to year and from category to category. It obviously matters, regardless, if you're either a flop or a big hit but anything inbetween (where most movies fall) is up for speculative debate.

For instance, just this year people have debated whether The Wife's box office take is strong enough for a Best Actress nomination for Glenn Glose (hint: it totally is... though winning will be harder) and whether it will matter that Roma won't really have that much of a theatrical presence (it might. it might not. The streaming only/mostly thing is relatively uncharted territory) or if the major success of A Star is Born will make a win possible for Lady Gaga (it won't hurt!)

For fun let's look at how much the Best Actress nominees films made before they were nominated for the past fifteen years and see what patterns emerge. The films in red won Best Actress Oscars.

The Link Persuasive

• Coming Soon Juliette Lewis is joining the Roseanne spinoff sitcom The Conners
• MNPP ACK! Somehow I missed the news that there's a new documentary coming about Montgomery Clift and it's playing at NewFest next month
• Awards Daily Willem Dafoe and Paul Greengrass are getting tributes at the Gotham Awards
• AV Club Eric Idle confirms a longstanding rumor about Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford in a scene from Empire Strikes Back...

Lots more after the jump including Judi Dench's frustration, Wicked's anniversary, Chris Pine's penis, Glenn Close's movies, JK Rowling's foot-in-mouth problem, and English language remakes of foreign hits which are fine as they are (sigh)...

Beauty Break: Celebrity Portraiture by Damon Baker

Glenn ClosePhotographer Damon Baker took that insanely great photo of Glenn Close while they rocked out to Janis Joplin recently together in his studio. Though he just barely turned 27, he's been a famous celebrity photographer for years now, first signing when he was just 18. He prefers black and white but lately has been experimenting with color. His favorite subjects appear to be Cole Sprouse (from Riverdale), singer Rita Ora, and a Swedish model named Simon J Loof.

Amazing portraits of Sir Ian McKellen, Tilda Swinton, Rami Malek, Zachary Quinto and more after the jump...

Months of Meryl: Evening (2007)

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.

#36 —Lila Ross, an old friend of a dying woman.

JOHN: While Meryl Streep is fiercely protective of her and her family’s privacy, she made no secret about what she got her daughter Mamie Gummer for her 24th birthday: Lajos Koltai’s Evening. Adapted from Susan Minot’s 1998 novel by the author herself, along with writer Michael Cunningham (The Hours), Evening follows Vanessa Redgrave’s Ann, an elderly woman drifting in and out of consciousnesses on her deathbed as she recalls a distant memory from her long-ago youth. That memory stars Claire Danes as a twentysomething Ann on the day of her best friend Lila’s (Mamie Gummer) wedding to a man she does not love. Ann, Lila, and the latter’s brother Buddy (Hugh Dancy) are instead infatuated with Harris (Patrick Wilson), a strapping doctor that each will either screw or regret not screwing...
