TIFF: Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma" Triumph

by Nathaniel R

Alfonso Cuarón's jaw-dropping Roma is inspired by his childhood in Mexico but it's no traditional memoir. Rather than focusing on his own life, he spins a slow-burn fictional memoir, imagining the emotional space occupied by the live-in maid/nanny who helped raise him...

Emmy Wins / Open Thread

by Nathaniel R

Though I don't always finish watching the Emmys, we'll list the winners for you and a few comments here and there. My personal half interest is because I dont watch enough TV or when I do I don't do it quickly enough to be current (of the nominees I really ♥️ Mrs Maisel, GLOW, The Americans, and Handmaid's Tale but am definitely not up to date with any of them), This leaves me without strong opinions but for "it's so dumb that the same people win every year!" But here's a place to discuss and we'll list the winners and maybe the occasional comment. A big thank you to Spencer for doing a swath of "who will/should win" posts for us this month.

RuPaul's Drag Race FINALLY won Best Reality Competition Series. Breaking the decade plus grip on this category from The Voice and The Amazing Race. ALL THE WINNERS AND MORE AFTER THE JUMP...

Weekend Box Office: The Predator, The Wife, and More...

by Nathaniel R

I'm eager to get back to regular moviegoing. I love festival season but being so far ahead of the game has drawbacks. Unlike most pundits/critics/bloggers whatever you want to call people, I don't especially like the system of the media seeing movies months before the public. Mostly because I like actually discussing them with you! So when it comes to regular releases you're probably ahead of me. Have you seen A Simple Favor  or Predator or The Nun or Peppermint or White Boy Rick or Lizzie? It's easy for us at TFE to miss films that open in theaters during the heat of festival season.

And now the box office charts of the weekends with links to our reviews and such if they exist...

Beauty vs Beast: Video Nasties

Hey everybody it's Jason from MNPP here poking my head out from in between NYFF screenings to entertain us with this week's "Beauty vs Beast" real quick - this weekend Jacques Audiard's The Sisters Brothers is hitting theaters, but as I am sure you are each and all aware it's not the first time we have been gifted the sight of Jake Gyllenhaal & Riz Ahmed on-screen together. Nope four years ago they gave us the wonder that was Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler, in which the self-determined (ha, understatement) Lou Bloom (Gyllenhaal) took the slightly less determined Rick (Ahmed) under his wing. And what a scratchy wing that was.

PREVIOUSLY Although her fate was a downer in Crouching Tiger we can now these many years later finally give a round of applause to Michelle Yeoh's character of Yu Shu Lien, who roundly trounced Zhang Ziyi's Jen Yu, taking 73% of your vote. I'm sure it's little comfort given what she lost, but hey, whatcha gonna do. Said Ani di:

"Not fair, this is like a gay sophie's choice. Torture."

Who will win the Emmy for Comedy and Drama Series?

By Spencer Coile

Happy Emmy Day, everyone! It’s been fun dissecting some of the major categories leading up to this fateful evening, where we will finally see who is awarded. Both the Comedy and Drama Series races are some of the most exciting in years. Seriously, it’s been eight years since something aside from Modern Family or Veep has won Best Comedy Series, so anything that wins this year will be a relief. So let’s speculate on who will take the top prizes of Emmy night...
