Red Carpet Lineup: Golden Globe Gowns

Jose here. Even though Cate Blanchett was in New York City on Sunday for the opening night of The Present, which marks her Broadway debut, the Golden Globes red carpet still found a way to happen (she was still Best Dressed person in the world that night).

No specific trends dominated the evening - other than strangely enough, long sheer sleeves as seen in Nicole’s harlequinesque McQueen gown, and one or two cases of pale dresses washing out the paler skin of their wearer - and everyone did their best to look as glamorous as possible. In fact it was hard to single out complete disasters other than once again, poor Nicole, who gets points for always being adventurous and who I know will make it up to us by looking astonishing at the Oscars, and SJP who also always tries hard to make a statement through fashion.

10. Natalie Portman in Prada 
When you’re playing one of the world’s most beloved fashion icons, why would you bother paying homage to anyone else? Portman’s nod to Jackie O wasn’t surprising or groundbreaking, but it certainly paid off. The color and retro appliqués are bold and unforgettable, and the fit is rather lovely. Instead of looking like what we think of as maternity fashion, it’s truly a regal look.

Oscar balloting has begun! As Nathaniel explained last week, AMPAS branches have received their nomination ballots. They’re due on the 13th. The Academy’s production designers occasionally make offbeat choices, though they don’t do it as often as the costume designers or the makeup artists. So here’s a final nudge on behalf of the best work of the year.

I’ve already written about three of the five movies I’d nominate, were I in charge. The crazed fandom of the apartment in Florence Foster Jenkins is a work of precision and inspiration. So is the heavily curtained metaphor that is the mansion in The Childhood of a Leader. The hotel in The Lobster, meanwhile, is as perfectly sterile as the above settings are feverish. All three would be a thrilling surprise on nomination morning.

My other two have become less present in the awards conversation than I’d guessed...

The Oscar Week: Palm Springs to NY to LA

This week Oscar contenders were very busy, making numerous appearances from Palm Springs to New York and back to California for Sunday’s Golden Globes. From the ceremonial Palm Springs International Film Festival that basically gives awards to every single contender as long as they show up to their fund raising gala, to the more discerning New York Film Critics Circle awards, people like Casey Affleck, Jeff Bridges and Amy Adams got to test out their acceptance speeches while gaining face time with media and Oscar voters...

New Oscar Predictions: Acting Categories... Locked Up or Not?

Post SAG & Globe Nominations each year oscar's acting categories start feeling locked up. But here's something always worth remembering: Each year brings us 1 or 2 new additions to the "nominated for SAG & Globe but still missed Oscar" close-but-no-cigar club.  This year in particular seems unlikely to have as much exact 5/5 correlation due to the double whammy of Oscar's acting branch voting a little later than usual (they don't get ballots until January 5th) and the precursors voting a smidge earlier than usual. The next two weeks are crucial; no one who is remotely close to a nomination should give up just yet.

ACTRESS
Portman has been winning lots of critics awards but, strangely, her film (just as strong or even stronger than her eery performance) isn't doing as well. She's not exactly locked for a second win but she's definitely giving Emma Stone a fright and probably preventing Amy Adams or Annette Bening from dreaming of their first very long-awaited wins. The nomination race is even tighter...
