Manuel here. It’s been a great couple of weeks for female-led films. We talked about Kate Winslet's The Dressmaker, Brie Larson’s upcoming Room, Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne’s Addicted to Fresno, Julianne Moore and Ellen Page’s Freeheld, and now Miss You Already. I had to dive into TFE’s archives because I knew we’d discussed this Drew Barrymore/Toni Collette film before. Turns out I talked about Catherine Hardwicke’s film when a pic of a fully bald Toni went around last fall (she plays a woman who gets diagnosed with cancer). The trailer pretty much plays like a clip-reel of the entire film, but that shouldn't deter us from putting it through our patented Yes No Maybe So trailer evaluation after the jump...

Smackdown 1995. Part 1

What did you see this weekend?

I did try to see one movie repeatedly this weekend but The Boyfriend never let me finish the senten --  "I know where this is leading and I'm not seeing the new Tom Cruise!" so I'll go alone tomorrow. (What can I say? I like stunts.) But the closest subway wasn't running this weekend anyway so it was a perfect DVR & Netflix catch-up plus Smackdown-focused weekend.

Smackdown 1995: Joan, Kate, Kathleen, Mare and Mira

Presenting the Supporting Actresses of '95. A chain smoking First Lady, a porn actress with dreams of hairdressing, a young romantic who lets her passions get the best of her, a famous musician who just wants to live quietly, and an astronaut's wife worrying for her husband in the stars.

THE NOMINEES 

1995 was a shockingly strong year for lead actresses. Though things were less crowded with possibility that year in the supporting competition (notice the leads crowding in here too) Oscar's roster here was exciting too, not just for its range of acting styles and characters but for an all first-timer field. Kate Winslet, Joan Allen and Mira Sorvino were all fresh faces just beginning to win mass attention. Mare Winningham and Kathleen Quinlan were the veterans, and though they'd both had previous awards attention (and Emmy win for Mare when she was only 21 years old and a Golden Globe nod for Quinlan for 1977's  I Never Promised You a Rose Garden), it had never gotten this glamorous: OSCAR NOMINATIONS!
