Where in the World is Gina Rodriguez

Chris here. Carmen Sandiego is about to be a big thing for Netflix and they have landed one helluva leading lady: the delightful Gina Rodriguez!

We have long loved the star thanks to Jane the Virgin. She also did showstopping work in a small role in this year's Annihilation so watching her platform elevate further will be a real treat. Nabbing this headling gig in the long discussed revamp of the character is a major win while her stars remains on the rise. You'll remember such big names as Jennifer Lopez being bandied about over the years...

One Season at a Time

Spread the good news, Netflix has renewed "One Day at a Time" for a third season! They made it official with this clever promo spot using one of Season 2's best jokes.

If you haven't been watching, you really should tune in and catch up. It can be a bit of an adjustment if you resist the traditional sitcom format (as I do) but it's worth the mental switch. The writing is incredibly strong (so many good jokes in every episode) and the characters are across the board endearing. If there's any justice in the world the legendary Rita Moreno will snag the Emmy nomination she was mysteriously denied last season for her even better work in season 2.

The acquisitions can promise no less than a breakout in recognition in the U.S. for the 52-year-old animator and his studio Science Saru. And yet, it's only apparently going to be riding on the tail of Yuasa's latest release, the Netflix anime series Devilman Crybaby, inspired by Nagai Go's tragic action-horror manga series...

A Ryan Murphy Political Comedy Quasi-musical?

Chris here. Ryan Murphy is a television titan with American Crime Story: Versace currently drawing high praise and umpteen projects in the pipeline, including a Sarah Paulson-led Nurse Ratched series. This next one already sounds kookier than the rest - Netflix has given a greenlight to The Politician, an hour-long comedic satire.

FYC: "Okja" for Best Visual Effects

by Ilich Mejía

With all due respect to Transformers: The Last Night and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, neither one made me fall in love with a creature forty times my size—mostly because I skipped both, but other reasons, too. Okja's titular superpig, however, had me smitten after her opening scene cavorting across a Korean forest with her best friend, Mija (played by Ahn Seo-hyun, a revelation).
