Interview: Sir Kenneth Branagh on "Belfast"

I had the opportunity to sit down with Sir Kenneth Branagh at the Middleburg Film Festival way back in October and saved that conversation, not quite intentionally, until now. Consider it a last minute gift to you all as near the end of Oscar season. Belfast is up for seven Oscars, three of which are for Branagh himself (Original Screenplay, Director, Picture) but when we spoke he was at the beginning of this awards journey. The famous actor/director was a delight in person, unconcerned with the clock, and very conversational, interested in talking about the movies in general and not just his own!  Outside of this official interview we discussed the movies we'd seen at the festival and he even asked for my take on a film that was getting harsh press at the time. He is an avid moviegoer in real life, which is a good personality trait you must agree.  Naturally we had to talk about the big moviegoing scene in Belfast.

NATHANIEL: One of the intriguing things you've said is that you wouldn't have done Belfast without the blessing of your siblings. But what if they'd said no? Would you have really tossed your script? 

KENNETH BRANAGH: It would have gone in the bottom drawer, yes. Over the years there's a few in there like that...

Who's That Girl ...who will be playing Madonna?

As we've known for some time Madonna is writing and directing her own biopic. It's inching closer to production with casting and audition rumors. Word has it that Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney and Sky Ferreira have auditioned for the leading role as well. Earlier rumors suggested the role was going to either Oscar nominee Florence Pugh or Emmy winner Julia Garner. Some online gossip suggested Lourdes Léon, Madonna's eldest, might even be in the mix though we think that's just the internet internetting...

Yes No Maybe So: Baz Luhrmann's 'ELVIS'

Baz Luhrmann's career began explosively with two of the most endearing, unusual, and entertaining films of the 1990s (Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet). His promise as a Great Showman was realized with his masterpiece Moulin Rouge! (2001) which was only his third feature. Unfortunately in the 21 years since that very modern movie musical revitalized its genre, he mostly vanished from movie screens. He's made only two features since, the disjointed epic Australia (2008) and a box office hit adaptation of The Great Gatsby (2013). Nearly a full decade later we finally have a sixth feature. His latest, which was untitled long enough that its official title Elvis is hysterically anti-climactic, is a biopic of the rock n roll superstar. The movie hits theaters on June 24th, so let's break the trailer down with our Yes No Maybe So™ system...

Exciting Project Alert: 'Spanish Dracula'

Remember the filmmaking brothers Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz? Their career together started strong with a box office smash American Pie (1999) and a well-loved modest hit About a Boy (2002). The brothers soon went solo as directors though they kept working together, producing and what not. Their subsequent work didn't capture the zeitgeist in the same way though there were sure-fire sequel hits (Little Fockers, The Twilight Saga: New Moon) a troubled attempted franchise (The Golden Compass) a few well received smaller pictures (A Better Life, Grandma) and an award winning TV series (Mozart in the Jungle). Their next project, their first co-directing gig in ages will be a biopic of their Mexican film star grandmother Lupita Tovar (pictured left) and it sounds just great...

Because of our long running "200 oldest living film stars" list we already knew that the brothers were descended from actresses...
